Nikhat Zareen, Of India, Wins Gold At The Women’s World Boxing Championships

At the World Boxing Championships held on Thursday in Istanbul, Nikhat Zareen, Of India, Wins Gold At The Women’s World Boxing Championships By virtue of her 5-0 victory over Jitpong Jutamas of Thailand, she became only the fifth Indian woman to ever win a world championship in any weight category.
The victory brings an end to a trying time for Nikhat Zareen , who was not able to compete in the Olympic tournament in Tokyo last year after losing to Mary Kom in a particularly contentious Olympic trial. And it was abundantly evident that she was the superior boxer in Istanbul, as she was victorious in all four of her fights by unanimous decision, which means that all five judges agreed that she was the more skilled competitor in the ring.

Nikhat Zareen started the opening round with an incredible amount of intensity and set out a couple magnificent combination attacks that left Jitpong panting for air. She continued this pattern for the entirety of the competition. Nikhat’s intensity was difficult for her rival to match, and it appeared like she almost caught her opponent off surprise. Nikhat Zareen won the first round with a score of 5-0 and immediately established her dominance.
Jitpong, who had been defeated by Nikhat Zareen in their most recent match at the 2019 Thailand Open, got off to a good start in the second round of competition. She chased Nikhat Zareen around the ring, hit her with a series of left-handed punches, and kept her distance from the Indian boxer the entire time. Jitpong was able to alter the tide of the fight by avoiding Nikhat’s range, which caused Nikhat Zareen to miss with her strikes. This allowed Jitpong to win the match. Jitpong came up with just enough wins to take the second round with a score of 3-2, although Nikhat Zareen maintained their lead throughout the match.

For Jitpong, the third round was a win-or-go-home situation. While she required all five judges to give her the round in order to complete her comeback victory, Nikhat Zareen only needed one of the judges to do it. Jitpong had a better understanding of Nikhat’s strategy, and she continued to avoid her punches even as Nikhat Zareen gave the impression that she was slowing down. But Nikhat Zareen came up in the final minute of the round and connected a couple of powerful hooks with a few body strikes to turn the tide in her favour. She then finished the round with a powerful right hand with 13 seconds left on the clock to seal the victory.
