2024 Mustang Dark Horse Revealed with 500 Hp and Track-Ready Suspension

The very first generation of the Mustang Dark Horse was developed specifically for competition, and it is rumoured to have a horsepower rating of up to 500. It will also feature unique options, including carbon-fibre wheels and Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres.

2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse Specs And Info

The Dark Horse is a wholly new breed of Mustang, meaning that it does not have any genetic ties to previous models of the breed. Even though it is based on the brand new seventh-generation V-8–powered Ford Mustang GT, the Dark Horse is more badass right out of the box, and it was bred for racing, with various standard performance enhancements and exclusive track-focused choices.

Consider the 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse to be the offspring of the now-retired Mach 1 and Shelby trim levels; however, neither of these options will be available for the first model year of the new Stang. The Dark Horse is the most track-capable Mustang that does not have Shelby badging, much in the same way that the Mach 1 was before it. A number of components from the Shelby GT350 and GT500 have been transferred over to this model, the most notable of which are the GT models’ lightweight carbon-fiber wheels. It is the first time that Ford will sell the exotic rims on a Mustang that is not a Shelby model, and even when they become available later in the model year, it is likely that they will still cost quite a bit of money.

The Ford Coyote 5.0-liter V-8 is the sole engine option for the Dark Horse variation of the Mustang GT, just as it is for the standard Mustang GT. Not only is this the most recent model of the engine, which now has dual throttle bodies fed by dual air intakes, but the variant used in the Dark Horse is considerably more advanced than that. Internal components are forged, and it utilises connecting rods from the 5.2-liter Predator V-8 that is supercharged and produces 760 horsepower in the GT500.

Ford claims that the Dark Horse engine is the most powerful naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V-8 company has ever manufactured and estimates that it generates a power output of 500 horsepower. It is paired with a conventional Tremec six-speed manual transmission, and the shifter features a unique titanium knob that was 3D manufactured. The second available transmission is Ford’s 10-speed automatic, and in either case, power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a Torsen limited-slip differential.

According to Ed Krenz, the principal nameplate engineer for the Mustang, the brand name Dark Horse had been kicking about inside Ford for quite some time before it was selected to christen the seventh-generation Mustang. Krenz remarked that his team “knew we were going to come out of the gate with a feature car” when they developed the S650.

Dark Horse was chosen over other heritage model names such as Bosses, Bullitts, and Mach 1s because it describes the unexpected. According to Krenz, this played a role in the company’s assertion that some competitors are leaving the segment while Ford, perhaps surprisingly, has introduced a brand-new Mustang. Dark Horse was one of the reasons why Dark Horse was selected.

Krenz claims that the model’s modest, dark look was another source of inspiration for the Dark Horse name. This design is intended to give off a vibe similar to that of a sleeper. However, we would argue that the Mustang Dark Horse does not qualify as a sleeper because it appears to be too dangerous. Even when compared with the standard GT model, which already has an aggressive mug, the front end of the Dark Horse goes one step further with a distinctive front end that features larger grille apertures and open nostrils for improved airflow. This helps the vehicle maintain a consistent temperature.

The smoked headlights and taillights contribute to the edgy appearance of the vehicle. In addition, the body of the coupe is embellished with characteristic aerodynamic details, such as a fixed rear wing and distinctive Dark Horse insignia on the front fenders and decklid. A notable diffuser and four-pointed exhaust tips are both featured on the back bumper of the vehicle. A Dark Horse can also be recognised by its unique Blue Ember metallic paint, as shown in the image to the right. Additionally, Ford offers a variety of applied or painted graphics in a wide range of colours and patterns to choose from.
