Fiat 128 – The Classic Fiat Must Remember,Engine,Performance,Dimensions & Weight
In the middle of the 1960s, Fiat started work on the Fiat 128, which was going to be the replacement for the 1100 “Millecento.” Dante Giocoso, the company’s well-known chief passenger car engineer, insisted that the vehicle have a transversely-mounted engine, a weight that did not exceed 700 kilogrammes, dimensions that were comparable to those of the Austin/Morris 1100, and all-independent suspension. Aurelio Lampredi created a brand new belt-driven SOHC engine that clocked in at 1.1 litres, and unequal-length driveshafts made it possible for the engine and the gearbox to be placed next to each other.
On March 29, 1969, the Fiat 128 was introduced to the public after being promoted in a prior advertisement. Car believed that the Fiat “as a 1100 established a brand new set of standards that other manufacturers have not been able to match at the price.”
1971 saw the introduction of a 1.3-liter engine, and by 1974, total sales had surpassed 1.75 million units. After another year had passed, the selection underwent some cosmetic changes. The 1300 GLS was manufactured by El Nasr of Egypt until as recently as 2009, despite the fact that Italian production ceased in 1985.
After sitting dormant for thirty years, the Fiat 128, which had to be recommissioned, is absolutely breathtaking in its originality.
